A Very New England Long Weekend

So, I have the Sunday scaries… but it’s Wednesday so the Wednesday evening scaries are a little easier to swallow. Since I started working full time 3 years ago now (crazy), I have been really horrible at taking vacation time. I work at a company that is pretty generous with their days but it’s still a little anxiety provoking when you’re new to the work world and you get a set amount of days compared to the months of vacations you get when you’re in school.

Last summer, I didn’t do any trips and ended up taking all of my time in the winter where I was holed up inside so I knew I didn’t want to do that again this year. I also knew I didn’t want to spend a lot of money so decided to stay somewhat local for my trips. There is so much to explore in New England and it’s so beautiful here in the summer. Growing up, we always vacationed in New England and I loved it. Living in Boston everything is even more convenient to get to and I was really excited to get to share some of my favorite places with CJ this year.

CJ is managing a new restaurant that just opened up on the water so it’s tough for him to get weekends off in the summer right now. My aunt and uncle own a house in Newport and I decided to go visit them as they were there this past weekend so Saturday morning I headed to Newport, Rhode Island. = Newport is one of my favorite places ever. I’ve been going there for years and I have so many memories there. It really is somewhere that feels like a home away from home. It was so freakin’ hot this past weekend, like high 90s which is tough for us New Englanders so it was so nice to be down on the shore in lil Rhody.

On Saturday the heat was so extreme, that when I got there, we actually skipped the beach and headed to Newport Vineyards for a wine tasting. I have never been to a vineyard or done a wine tasting but I do love wine so I was excited to give it a try. All of the wines were delicious! We started with their complimentary chardonnay and then got to choose 5 to taste from. The wines were SO good. I can’t remember all of the ones I tasted but some favorites were: Bellevue Blush (Rose), Sauvignon Blanc, In the Buff (Chardonnay), and Island White. I went with my aunt and uncle and it was so much fun. I’m obsessed and already dying to go to one again with CJ. Newport Vineyards was really pretty and they also had a gift shop and farmers market happening when I was there. They also let you keep the glass from your tasting so I happily put that on display on our new wine shelving.

While I mentioned I’ve been going to Newport for years, this trip was a trip of firsts because I also attended my first polo match with my aunt, uncle, and my cousins. I had never been to a polo match but it was a super cool experience and one I’d definitely recommend doing. We were lucky that it was USA versus Italy so it was a pretty high profile polo match. The polo match was really cool because you get to set up a tent and blankets and have food and drinks while watching the match.

I took Monday off which allowed me to get some errands done before heading to the Cape yesterday (Tuesday) with CJ. I was so excited to get some beach time in but unfortunately Cape Cod was a little crazy as a tornado hit as we were driving there. We drove through extremely heavy rain but didn’t think much of it. We went and got lunch – I got a lobster roll (which was SO not F-Factor approved) and then headed in the direction of our hotel. Our hotel let us know they couldn’t check us in formally because of the power outage and that all their amenities were closed until they turned back on. It was also cold and cloudy which meant we really couldn’t spend time on the beach… so we just sat and hung out in our hotel room (that had no power to charge our phones or turn on the TV) which really sucked. However, I called a mini golf place in the area and they happened to have power so we ended up heading there to spend some of the time.

Mini golf was so much fun and I had a few holes where I was up which was exciting. When we went back to our hotel the lights were on – which also was exciting!

Today we woke up and it was overcast which was a little bit of a bummer but we played a Par 3 course and the sun ended up coming out so we were able to get some beach time after all!
